History

Returning the #98 modified to NASCAR competition

Shamrock Motorsports is a second-generation racing team that competes on the NASCAR Whelen and Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) tours.

Headquartered outside of Seattle, WA with racing operations in Claremont, NC, the team will enter the #98 modified on a part-time schedule in 2024.

The team traces its roots back to the 1960s when founder Justin Hanney's father, Ernie Hanney, would field entries in the #98 modified with famous drivers such as Bill Harman, Eddie Flemke and Richie Evans in the New England area.

After serving in Vietnam and moving to North Carolina in the 1970s, the #98 modified was retired to focus on building a motorsports business that remained as a pillar in the NASCAR community for more than 50 years. Shamrock Motorsports carries on the family racing tradition returning the #98 modified to competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you are curious - here are some answers

Shamrock Motorsports runs tour-type modifieds in both the NASCAR Whelen Modified and Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) tours. At this time we do not place priority on any series and instead run a "pick and choose" schedule throughout the season.
Yes, one day, but for the foreseeable future we will compete on a part-time basis while Landon focuses on a CARS Tour championship run.
If there is a Whelen or SMART tour race, yes, but not for the regular weekly modified series. Logistically, running at Bowman Gray Stadium for the weekly modified series requires a car that has different rules than the tour modifieds. At this time, it just doesn't make business sense to have a car dedicated to the Stadium when we know we would not run a full schedule there.
Yes! We are building our merchandise catalog and all Shamrock Motorsports merchandise will be sold through Landon Huffman's store landonhuffman.shop.
Yes. Throughout the year the team will sell used parts as they are no longer used for competition. Send an email to info@shamrockmotorsports.com to express your interest in used parts.
